Western Light
In 2022, I self-published my photography zine entitled “Western Light.” Below is the foreword from the book:
In October of last year, I took a leap and decided to move across the country to California. It wasn’t so much the moving that was difficult—I was born in Connecticut, moved to New Zealand as a child, attended high school in Vermont, started college in Georgia, completed college in Michigan, and lived in New York City after graduating But this move felt different. It was the first time I was moving to a new place entirely on my own—there was no job, no apartment, no school awaiting me when the wheels touched the tarmac. This new place was mine, and only mine, to make my own.
I named this book Western Light as a nod to how different the light feels in California. It’s warmer, softer—like it’s wrapping its arms around you, urging you to leave everything behind and walk straight into the ocean. The photos that follow have helped me contextualize my place on this new coast and make it feel just a little bit smaller than it is—if that’s at all possible.
