Arboreal Cartography
This mixed-media site study explores the dialogue between built and natural elements on my Connecticut property through multiple modes of observation. Spurred by the loss of a beloved Sugar Maple to road salt damage, the documentation became both a memorial and a recognition of the precarious relationship between development and preservation.
Beginning with a technical site analysis mapping specimen trees and solar patterns, the document evolves through layers of photography, sketches, and hand-drawn elements. The investigation reveals the property’s history, telling a story of how Connecticut’s transformation from farmland to suburbs left behind sentinel trees that now coexist with careful landscape design.
